Please note: This graphic novel has a lot of nudity and sexual content in it. If you are uncomfortable with this sort of stuff, I suggest you click away because this is not the book for you. With that said, let’s begin.

The Extended Dream of Mr. D is a weird exploration of the psyche and a surrealist take on the self-discovery story that poets love so very much. It was written and drawn by Spanish cartoonist Max, real name Francesc Capdevila Gisbert, and was published in 2000 by Drawn and Quarterly. When you look it up on Google, you might find that it’s generally classified as “humor”. I would personally file it under the category of “the lost Salvador Dalí paintings that got arranged into a comic for some reason” but I suppose “humor” is close enough depending on your perspective.

It’s a little difficult to describe the plot since the whole thing is the dream of our main character, Christopher D, while he is in a forty-day coma. Breaking down the specific events that occur wouldn’t be helpful either considering that everything works on dream logic, so there’s very little rhyme or reason to anything. What I can tell you is that this is less of a “point A to point B” story and more of a “take as many pieces as you can to figure out what is going on” story. It’s a mystery of the self that is unfolded to us as we read. Despite this, I shall attempt to explain as best as I can.
