This is the first time something like this happened to me.

It was a regular Wednesday afternoon; I was enjoying a beer while reading Blackhole when I noticed that I got an email. It was from indie comic writer Simon Ward reaching out to ask if I would be interested in reading and reviewing his latest book Feast that was illustrated by Jeremmya Devin. I have never had a comic creator reach out to me for a review, so this was a bit of a surprise. Still, I was intrigued. Getting to read a new, original comic while spotlighting an independent creator? Count me in!

Feast is about a man named Earl Mitchel who is first shown on a date with a cute girl, who suddenly turns into a demonic monster. He manages to escape but finds that he’s somehow been isekai-ed to Hell and bumps into another demon girl by the name Gorgo Hecatate. She declares him to be the new sheriff then coerces him into joining her if he wants to get back to Earth. With no other option, and no home button to escape this mess, Earl reluctantly agrees.

Will Earl make it out of Hell in one piece? Can this Hecatate chick be trusted? For now, only one thing is clear: this is going to be a long, bumpy ride.

This was a solid first issue. It’s a fun concept that was tailormade for nerds of every type. Earl is a “loveable loser” who’s not a super badass but is determined enough to brave through Hell to get home. And his average-joe personality opens the door to a lot of potential comedy when he’s forced to deal with demonic beings he’s not at all…
